Execution Requires Balance
In 2010, the # 1 issue among senior executives is Strategy Execution. A recent survey by The Conference Board
revealed that 42% of those surveyed said "excellence in execution" was their greatest concern. Another 40% said
that "consistent execution of strategy by top management" was at the top of the list.
Successful organizations need a combination of inspirational leadership and effective management working together
to implement strategy.
Leadership - Leadership creates the Vision and sense of urgency. Leaders communicate, inspire and motivate
the organization. They help the organization identify and focus on what is most important. They will challenge the
organization to perform by establishing expectations that stretch the capabilities of the employees. They will provide
a powerful example of commitment to the organization and to the Vision. A good leader provides the context for
the management process.
Management - The challenge of management is much more specific. Management provides the rigor, alignment
and discipline required to implement the strategy and achieve the Vision. Management must organize and focus the
resources of the organization. Strategy execution requires attention to detail and a methodical approach to getting
things done. It also requires the discipline to track, analyze and hold people accountable for the countless tasks
that must be performed successfully every day.
It Takes Both - Strategy execution requires strong leadership supported by a capable management team. Leadership
defines where the organization is going and management determines how it is going to get there. Management without
leadership may create an effective operation, but it will lack energy and direction. Leadership without management
will lack follow through and discipline. But when both are present in good measure, the organization becomes a powerful
force capable of great success.
If you are frustrated by your organization's inability to execute its strategy, ask yourself two hard questions: Is your
leadership strong enough to inspire and motivate? Is your management disciplined enough to focus and prioritize? You need
both to be successful.

The Five Stages of Economic Recovery |
Since the market bottomed in March of 2009, the economy has struggled to recover from one of the worst recessions in
history. We have all been going through our own psychological recovery at the same time. It occurred to me that this
process resembles the 5 stages of grief we suffer when we lose a loved one. I think I have finally reached "Acceptance".
